I think rdenirojb87 was referring to Roberta Flack, not Donna.

Koch and another nonsensical post, now comparing Roberta to K&D.

i was obviously talking about roberta flack. cliff, i've tolerated your rude comments towards me enough now. i used to respect you because of your musical opinions, but your too fucking childish and pathetic to deserve any respect from me anymore.

cliff, stop being so quick to jump down everyone's throat at the tiniest little nothing. i thought your asshole days were behind you, but you continue to demonstrate your immaturity here for whatever reason. you amazed me, well not really, when you were absent for over a week, and your first post in over a week is directed towards me, attempting to instigate as always.

then you attack wisc for no reason, and are too delusional to realize that you've been all over his ass since he got here. it is fucking unbelievable to look back at your history here and see all the shit you've gone out of your way to start. it's both hilarious and extremely pathetic that you still can't get off kochman's dick. i really really think you should go back on your lithium. go pick a fight in real life you big internet pussy, and stop trying to start shit on the online, like you have been the past several years. it's fucking pathetic. if you didn't know as much about the music as you do, you would hardly have anyone's respect here. as it is, a lot of people fucking despise you but are afraid to admit it. now go ahead and live up to your reputation by getting infuriated, and giving a hilariously irrational post.

I obviously do not have the decoder ring because I can barely keep track of my own, lone identity on this site, much less spend the time and effort to keep track of who's who in the troll/alt zoo, who started it, who hit who, who looked at who, who crossed the line first, blah, blah, blah.

Best to just duck, cover, ignore and let the adversaries piss on each other's shoes in pursuit of the Internet Special Olympics Participation Ribbon.

What am I missing?

And here I thought it was another thread about Donna, who can be good until the bizarre caterwauling.

Instead it's about the forum. Which can be good until the bizarre caterwauling.

Cue Donna scream on infinite loop ...

" This is because of the Kool Aid comment?"
not at all. that was just the last straw. cliff has been trying to provoke me and many others for quite some time now. and most of his comments from his history here look more like a hs girl's facebook page than comments made by a fully grown adult male.

Just a little food for thought....
A wise man (my father) once told me... If you let someone that you think is an asshole piss you off, that makes you an even bigger asshole.
If he didn't get a reaction everytime he poked you, he would eventually stop poking you. your reaction is what makes it fun.

The voice of sanity.

Your Dad is indeed a wise man. Mine told me something very similar once...."You don't have to murder a man who is committing suicide."

Shifting gears - I am coming up to Wilmington on 01 Dec to see the String Cheese Incident at the Tower Theater. (Chees bashing in the other thread notwithstanding)

Were you planning on going or willing to chance it?

Sorry Rick... can't make it. Current job uncertainty has us cutting back alot and trying to preserve as much cash as possible. Have to be a little choosy where our entertainment $$ get spent these days. Not much of a cheese fan, so I can't really justify spending the cash. Thanks for thinking of me though!! If you are going to be in town for a few days, maybe we can get together again for lunch!

those are wise words finster, and i usually follow them. however, i can assure you cliff does not piss me off. he's more like an annoying fly that's always buzzing around, pestering people, and looking for shit to land on. i responded the way i did just to let him know how pathetic he is, and that i know for a fact many others despise him, but won't admit it here.

"don't give the bastard the satisfaction"

I think Ravi has 2 others playing, the bongo guy and another...sitar(?). This is like Indian jam dead, they're chasing each other around all intertwined. Conversing. I've got this sudden urge to worship a cow in the field next door...cool or dire?

serious, this is very good, i found it with some seeders at dime

haha..indian jam dead...I liek the term but although Indian music is all about chasing eachother around it isn't really like the dead at all. I always had that impression too until I read about it a little more and heard some interviews with Ravi.

People were comparing his music to the Dead and jazz artists of the time and he denied that emphatically.

In reality almost all the music Ravi Shankar played was based on very detailed traditional scales and melodies that he had memorized (as do all traditional Indian musicians) and didn't really implement improvisation. Indian musicians literally memorize thousands of scales and melodies and all good classical Indian musicians know them so although it sounds like improve they all generally know where one tune will go once they hear the first one.

Its really crazy stuff...most of the scales have different notes on the way up than they do on the way down and often a different number of notes on the way up and the way down. Nothing like western music.

As far as Donna goes...I don't think she had a bad voice when the songs suited her...it's just that I think she fit with the Dead's repertoire. I like her with JGB in the late 70s...and even some Dead shows in 77. Listen to a version of Sunrise from 1977 9can't remember the date of the one I'm thinking of) and if you can honestly tell me her voice is just horrible then you must have a hearing deficiency. That song is not an easy one to sing.

thanks for the info, that is rehearsed? Amazing! I wonder what Dead shows Ravi heard, I could be wrong - usually - I think Ravi could have sat in with the 1978 GD. It's sad, but other than woodstock, this is my only exposure to Sitar India. On Donna, Scarlet Begonias is not complete without her voice, my mental history. This is the txt I'm printing >>

back to Donna, she's really good in the JGB, but if Monte or someone perhaps does an interview with her, please bring a 20sec recording of her vocal into to the Playin, play it then ask..."Donna, what were you thinking??". I've actually heard a few very good Donna Playin wails, maybe 79?, in tune, but far and in between. The rest of 2/24 Playing is whew good!! But she gets the last ohohowaaaaaaoooohhhhhhhhahohhhhhhhhhhhwaaaaaaaaaaaiiiieee! I love donna, forever a member of the Grateful Dead and The Jerry Garcia Band.
Well, thijgs to fret over haha.

There was interview with Donna posted here a few years back and she comments that she has troubles listening to many of her performances with the band. The article was in the Baltimore Sun in 2007, however i can't find a copy.

Although Donna sang some nice harmonies with Bobby during the Orpheum run of 76, she was at best, awful to mediocre when singing with the GD, but nice eye-candy. Her best contributions were with the JGB, with her and Maria Muldaur.

Imo, Keith was the real reason for her being part of the Dead, not her vocal ability.

If the 70's Donna sang for American Idol, she wouldn't get past square one, and that's the plain truth!

oh thats not true. Donna actually had quite a good voice, but in general the dead was a shitty band for her to be a part of. She wasn't really a good fit and thats obvious listening to certain tracks. I'll agree with the other poster that on songs like tomorrow is forever is where she can shine. Donna had a really good voice, she shines when she sings softly, and we mostly remember her for GSET and playin, where she screams.

Donna wasn't cut out to be a rock singer. I thought she excelled on country songs though, like Tomorrow is Forever.
